Journal 4/30 | Dear M

Hey M,  It's me. I don't really know how to start this memo and there's a lot on my mind but I guess I just wanted to say that it was nice to think about you again. I know you hated that word—“but”—and I’ve always used it too much. Looking back, it was one of those little things about us, one of many small gaps that grew into something larger over time. The real reason I'm writing this is because I've been thinking about you, and I have been for the past year now. It comes in waves and quite honestly I thought everything that needed to get out of my system had enough time to do so. This past year was a year where I wasn't invited to participate in your life, nor you in mine. And yet, I've spent days if not weeks using my memories of you as a conduit to reconsider what love  means to me and the type of person I'd like to become. I miss being involved in your life. Romance aside, you're one of the best people I've ever had the chance to meet. And t...

Journal 3/30 | Fear Not

Fear not.  During my senior year of college, I was blessed enough to cross paths with one of the most interesting and genuine people I have yet to meet. His name was Richard and I knew him for an intense couple months. We had met on a tech trek to Silicon Valley over winter break and something about his character drew me towards him. It wasn't just me that felt this magnetic pull either-- everyone loved his bubbly personality. But something about him made me feel really close to him despite not having known him as long as perhaps some of the other students on the trip. Whenever I re-read this journal entry, I should reach out to him as I haven't been the best at keeping up with friends post-graduation.  ___  tbd.

The Ecotone

Wow, Hank Green. Just wow.  "In ecology, there's a word for the place where the land is neither marsh nor scrub, rock nor ocean, forest nor plain. It's the ecotone, and I know I have to explain because my word processor's spell-checker doesn't even know it's a word. Ecotone: a transitional zone between two communities containing the characteristic species of each. It can be a fine line — behind me there is forest, in front of me grassland. Or it can be gradual — a forest reaching into wetter land, until the last tree is surrounded only by reeds and pitcher plants... The internet was my place, but it’s not a place. It's beyond the ecotone. I was still a natural being, but in a purely cultural place... Nothing on the internet is natural. I grew up in a place that isn’t a place. I was formed by completely unnatural surroundings where my physical body was often a mere nuisance and experiences were limited entirely to the visual..." https://scholarworks.umt...

Journal 2/30 | On Homelessness

Well... here we are. Making some obvious modifications to this challenge here. I clearly don't operate on a daily journaling schedule quite yet so it'll just be an objective to finish 30 journal entries. Having thought about it, it's not about the daily uploads that matter most to me, it's being able to set aside time for quality  reflection and journaling. Anyhow, to the actual entry:  -____________________________- Homelessness. It's probably the biggest negative social externality in metropolitan areas and yet, we don't have a clear solution or even playbook to combat it. Sure there are plenty of programs that attempt to address it but from the one's I've heard about as a passive citizen with no real stake-- and technically I should have a moral one-- in this issue, there doesn't seem to be any plans to address it effectively. Having walked through the streets of Philadelphia for the past 45 minutes, I've seen way too many homeless people wh...

Journal 1/30 | Romanticizing Purpose and Life

I haven't done this in a while, so this is a challenge to post 30 quality journals, I am holding myself to a challenge: journal every day for 30 minutes (or less if I get better) and post 30 throughout the year. As I continue my job search , I've begun to recognize two constants in my life.  The first is that I feed off of my wins. It's kind of like hitchhiking in this manner. Hundreds of people pass you by and the person that comes to stop gives you a jolt of excitement and hope. This is not to say that I want to be desperate-- even though I am sometimes. But it's the small wins that keep me going. I'm quick to forget the mundane, shitty, miserable moments of my life because I know it only takes one decision to turn that around. Perhaps this is a bad state of mind to be in because lots of people encourage incremental growth (and I guess this journal is ironically an example of such an attempt) but I truly believe life is a series of decisions and the beauty behind...

The Story of Hakan Sukur

Image
Very interesting.  Research more of this when I have some time.  He supposedly lives around the Palo Alto area and has a YouTube channel so maybe I can get in touch with him through YouTube.  Apart from the politics which I know little about, he's famous for scoring the fastest goal in the World Cup and it happened against Korea in 2002. After the match, he's seen carrying a Korean flag and showing great sportsmanship. Pretty cool tidbit of soccer history.

Recreational Futsal Platform

The basic premise behind this is to create a platform where people can sign up for local futsal matches. This seems fairly straightforward and on a high level it boils down to a couple steps/requirements:  1. Get permits/ the rights to book out a futsal field or an indoor basketball court for some time.  2. Equipment (pennies).  3. A platform or method of booking games. This needs a simple design and allows members to get simple directions on how to get to the game upon signing up. It also needs the capability to pay.  4. Marketing. We need to tap into networks of football/soccer/futsal lovers. It will help to have an audience of my own but there are definitely local groups that I can tap into. Hopefully I can build out my YouTube channel to make this a possibility.  Games will be small futsal scrimmages in teams of 5-6 depending on the size of the venue. Two-hour time slots will see 3 teams rotating in time slots designated by the manager present.  Some th...
